Watch 'The Pruitt-Igoe Myth' for free until July 31st
Here at The Modernist we try not to sweep under the carpet some of the failures of Modernism. Mistakes have been made and the Pruitt-Igoe Housing project in St Louis is often held up as a prime example by those who claim Modernism lacked humanity.
There were major flaws in the design of Pruitt-Igoe but there is a much more complex narrative around its failure - something this documentary explores.
The fact the vast majority of the tenants at Pruitt-Igoe were black also adds another, more prescient, dimension to the debate. This documentary tries to avoid any judgements on the architecture but it asks pertinent and enduring questions about social housing, poverty, de-industrialisation and race that will resonate in many cities across the world.
